“Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him.” “Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these. ‘
If you are anything like me, you desire for your children to grow up with the love of our Lord in their hearts and would not do anything to hinder them from seeking out Jesus.
I struggle with teaching my children about the Faith and fostering those teachings. I’ve been forcing them to come to church with me even though I would not even be able to focus.
I have two children who have Autism Spectrum Disorder. They mainly have a hard time grasping the Mass. Reverence and worship should be taught to the minis, but how many listen to the Word? Bits and pieces at a time and teaching tools- at least, that is what I find to be the key with my children.
Below are a couple of ideas to keep your minis engaged and in love with our Lord:
- I believe all churches should offer Children’s Worship Bulletins. These customizable bulletins are for kids. Often, the children do not yet understand the readings, so this tool does a great job engaging them and aiding them in following along. If you don’t use it as a tool in Church, sitting the children down together for weekly reflection and activities related to Sunday Mass has been tremendously helpful in developing their faith.
- Play with your food. Yep, you read correctly! This is an edible way to participate in the Lessons of the Bible and a great memory-maker!
Here are a few examples of how we turned simple snacks into a biblical lesson:
3. I used the tools above to help teach my children learn the Word of God. We often followed these lessons with Superbook or Donut Man

“Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me”. Matthew 18:1-5
